Most people believe that huge corporations are only concerned about revenue.  Up to a certain point, that may be true considering that the bottom line of every business is the amount of revenue generated for the fiscal year.  In fact, this is how the success of a business is measured.  For publicly traded companies, this would determine if people would buy the stock or sell them, and ultimately determines their life and death.

Although revenue is the bottom line, companies and corporations take it upon themselves to be socially conscious.  This is because the community’s patronage is ultimately what keeps the company alive.  And since the community favors them, they have to give back.  This leads to several programs instituted inside and outside the company.  Soup kitchens for the starving, outreaches, charity donations and going green.

Yes.  Going green.  This is extremely important for a number of reasons.  One reason would be because the main thought going around is that the corporations are those that spend a lot of paper and energy, and are therefor the source of a huge amount of pollution.  Whether this is true or not is not the question.  The end point is, companies do spend a lot of energy, and should do what can be done to replenish whatever was taken.

Since these programs are instituted within the company, then even the vendor (also known as outsourced) portions of the company have to implement the same type of program.  The logical reasoning is simple: if we don’t stop taking care of the environment, then later on there will be no environment to work in.  Without that, the company will cease to exist.  It’s just a matter of self preservation.

Simple programs go a long way.  You can simply start small.  One change could be in the use of paper.  Streamline the processes and take away the need for signatures on paper.  This would benefit the company in two ways: savings on paper, and security of information as there would be less papers to take care of and shred (even the lack of shredding will translate in energy savings).  Since most, if not all, companies are on line, then that shouldn’t be so difficult.

Pay attention as well to how old and outdated hardware is taken care of.  Some just throw this away.  Encourage recycling, or even giving away the old hardware to charities that may make use of them.  For recycling, some small recycling plants even pay for junk that is sent to them to be recycled.  No matter how small, this would help with the purchase of new equipment.

Going green is a project for everyone, as everyone will definitely benefit from this.  No matter what country the company is in, going green should be a primary objective.  Some may just need a push in the right direction, but given the benefits, everyone will be encouraged to work on it.
